Public Reading of the Declaration of Independence

Wednesday, July 8 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

The Northville Historical Society is proud to invite the community to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary with special America250 events at Mill Race Village this July.

In addition to July 4 post parade open house, a commemorative event will be held on Wednesday, July 8 at 6:00 p.m., when the Northville Historical Society joins communities across the nation and the state of Michigan in a coordinated public reading of the Declaration of Independence. Featured guest readers will include City Mayor Brian Turnbull, Township Supervisor Mark Abbo, and School Superintendent RJ Webber, who will lend their voices to this historic document as part of the America250 commemoration.

Public readings of the Declaration of Independence date back to 1776, when the document was first shared aloud with citizens following its adoption by the Continental Congress on July 4. One of the earliest and most notable readings took place on July 8, 1776, in Philadelphia, where the Declaration was proclaimed in the city square to gathered crowds, accompanied by the ringing of bells. These readings helped spread the message of independence throughout the colonies and rallied public support for the revolutionary cause.

The July 8 event at Mill Race Village continues this historic tradition, offering the community an opportunity to hear the words that shaped a nation and to reflect on their enduring meaning.

The events is free and open to the public. Families, residents, and visitors are encouraged to attend and take part in this meaningful celebration of America’s 250th anniversary.
